Chambers is seeking to recruit a Team Leader’s Assistant to join a dynamic and high-performing clerking team. This senior-level role is ideal for someone with a minimum of 5+ years’ experience in clerking and practice management, possessing leadership potential, sound commercial judgment, and exceptional client service skills. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting the strategic goals of Chambers while delivering consistently high standards to barristers, instructing solicitors and clients.
About the Role
This position involves the delivery of practice management support to the most junior section of Chambers, specifically supporting a recently established junior-junior barrister team as part of Chambers ongoing strategy of expansion at this level. The role involves some focus on the launch of new members joining from pupillage, as well as clerking established practitioners up to 8 years’ call.
The successful candidate will work closely with the clerk Team Leader (David Amdor), deputising as the lead clerk on occasion and supervising the work of other clerks in the team.
As well as regular day-to-day clerking duties in a leading commercial chambers, the role will also require enthusiasm for business development activities and other client engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Practice Management
- Actively manage and coordinate barristers’ diaries, availability, court commitments, and conference schedules.
- Assist with the delivery of tailored career and practice development support, including performance reviews and business plans for individual barristers.
- Provide clear, timely and appropriate recommendations in response to new opportunities.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date case records and fee information using Chambers’ systems (e.g. LEX).
- Possess an awareness of compliance and regulatory obligations, including BSB Handbook requirements and Chambers’ internal policies.
- Handle listing of cases in court, the filing of time-sensitive documents and manage other court-related logistics.
- Provide timely and accurate fee quotes, fee notes/bills, manage fee negotiations, and monitor new work allocation for fairness and transparency.
Business Development & Marketing
- Contribute to Chambers’ business development strategy, including identifying market trends and growth opportunities.
- Support pupils and members with seminars, and client-facing events.
- Attend marketing functions and client meetings as needed, ensuring feedback is recorded and acted upon.
- Collaborate with the marketing team to execute BD initiatives for the junior-juniors team and some wider Chambers activities.
Financial Management
- Understand individual members’ financial goals and support income generation across the team.
- Lead on budgeting, pricing, and negotiation of fees
- Assist in managing billing cycles, and financial reporting.
- Maintain an awareness of Chambers’ broader financial objectives and consider activities and actions that might contribute to Chambers financial growth.
Team Leadership & Development
- Provide day-to-day leadership to junior clerks, clerks and staff within the team.
- Set a positive example through a professional, proactive, and collaborative approach.
- Promote equality, diversity, and fair access to work within the group.
- Foster a collegiate working environment and ensure effective communication within and between clerking teams.
- Participate in team meetings and internal committees, contributing to policy development and operational planning.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a barristers’ chambers
- Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage multiple demands under pressure.
- A dynamic, commercial mindset and an understanding of the legal services market, particularly within commercial litigation.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships with barristers, solicitors, clients and colleagues.
- A strategic thinker who can help drive individual and team performance in line with Chambers’ long-term objectives.
